The Bug Wars were a long series of informal competitions in the 1990s and early 2000s that sought to make more and more complex insect designs. In the 1970s, insect designs were thought to be impossible. In the 1980s with new developments in design technique and paper, folders began to realize that insect and other anthropod designs were feasible, which came to fruit in the early 1990s. An origamist would see another's design at a convention or other meeting and then try to make a more difficult design. Longer, thinner legs, multiple claws, and multisection jaws were some of the elements that were strived for. Folders even read entymology journals simply to find anthropods with an increasing number of appendages. All resulted in a more literal origami style. Even insects eventually did not prove a large enough challenge so multi-subject models came about.
